Venture Development Group conducted extensive site investigation in several areas during the site selection process for this turnkey design/build project. The team acquired the client’s preferred site, and the structure is being contructed with additional space available for growth.
The Alutiiq Center will house the Anchorage offices of the Afognak Native Corporation and its subsidiary, Alutiiq LLC. The building and site design of the five-story structure draw inspiration from images of Afognak Island and the region of the Alutiiq people. Geographic elements are reinterpreted in a contemporary design that exemplifies this native corporation’s place on the cutting edge of technology in the business environment.
The building contains a small museum exhibiting displays of historical and cultural materials of the Alutiiq people. Modern artwork of cultural significance is integrated throughout the lobby and upper levels of the office building.
The architect collaborated with the owner’s cultural committee to effectively weave artwork into the building design, rather than have it applied afterward.
The exterior uses a granite facing and aluminum composite panels for the building’s skin. The design incorporates two exterior deck areas for office workers’ use.
A projecting glass wall above the entry contains the images of ancient petroglyphs found in the Alutiiq region. Petrogyphs are images carved into stone on Afognak Island. The projecting glass provides a unique identity for the building.
