The new Aleutian Pribilof Islands Association (APIA) office
building is a 37,400 sf, 3-story project located on a beautifully wooded site adjacent to Campbell Creek in midtown Anchorage.
The building design concept takes its inspiration from the traditional visor worn by the Aleut hunters that is penetrated with modern program elements. The two-story lobby area allows for large gatherings and celebrations that can spread to the exterior deck which is sited alongside the existing trees that border the building site. An Aleut Heritage library and studio on the first floor will display native artwork and traditions as well as provide a place for artists to create their work. Artifacts, artwork and photographs will be displayed throughout the public areas of the building to share and educate visitors about Aleut heritage.
The site is located in the Campbell Creek riparian corridor and required a development concept that carefully addressed the special design challenges of the site. The concept is based on preservation of natural features, context sensitive building siting and restoration of developed and disturbed areas. Treatment of stormwater and the protection of the greenbelt from sediment is a primary concern of the design elements. The landscaping is dominated by site appropriate native vegetation that is selected on the basis of its ability to adapt to the various environmental conditions created on site. There will be wetter areas in the drainage ways and drier areas on the building pad that required the use of various native trees, shrubs and perennials.
